“Strengthening Food Security and Sustainable Livelihoods”

In Lobei, farmers are transforming their communities through climate-resilient practices under the Karamoja Strong Program (KSP). During a recent site monitoring visit with our partners from Danish Refugee Council (DRC), it was observed that farmers have adopted techniques such as swales and berms for water retention, water catchment for tree planting, and bio-intensive soil preparation. These practices are improving soil fertility, conserving water, and increasing the survival rates of crops and trees in arid conditions.

As a result, households are strengthening their food production systems and building sustainable livelihoods. Many are now self-sufficient, selling surplus produce to earn income, which enables them to purchase additional foodstuffs and even start small businesses. These gains are enhancing resilience to drought and unpredictable rainfall, while fostering local ownership and long-term sustainability.

Building Community Resilience through the Karamoja Strong Program in partnership with Danish Refugee Council, Kenya (DRC)

Frontiers Children Development Organization (FCDO), in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council Kenya, is proud to be among the implementing partners of the Karamoja Strong Program, an initiative designed to strengthen community resilience, promote sustainable livelihoods, and enhance social protection among vulnerable communities across the Karamoja cluster region.

As part of the ongoing implementation of the project, Frontiers’ field officers have successfully conducted a series of trainings for project participants on Resilient Design (RD) Practices. These trainings were carried out in the communities of Lobei, Urum, Lokiriama, Loreng’ippi and Lochor Emeyen bringing together community members to build their capacity in adopting practical and sustainable approaches that help them better withstand environmental and economic shocks.

The training sessions focused on equipping participants with knowledge and skills that promote locally driven solutions for resilience. Through interactive discussions and practical learning approaches, community members were guided on how to integrate resilient design principles into their daily livelihoods, enabling them to adapt to changing climate conditions while strengthening their economic stability.

By empowering communities with these critical skills, the Karamoja Strong Program continues to support households in developing sustainable coping mechanisms that reduce vulnerability and enhance long-term wellbeing. The initiative also fosters community participation and ownership, ensuring that the solutions developed are inclusive, practical, and sustainable.

Frontiers Children Development Organization remains committed to working alongside partners such as the Danish Refugee Council to deliver impactful interventions that support communities in building resilience, improving livelihoods, and strengthening social protection systems for a more secure and sustainable future.

Project participants in Urum pose together after a practical training session on Resilient Design (RD) practices under the Karamoja Strong Project, implemented by Frontiers Children Development Organization in partnership with the Danish Refugee Council Kenya. During the training, community members learned key resilient land management techniques including swales and berm construction to slow and retain rainwater, water catchment preparation for tree planting, and deep soil preparation through Bio-Intensive Double Digging to improve soil fertility, aeration, and root development. Participants also practiced proper planting techniques to increase survival and productivity of crops and trees in arid conditions.

Food Security and Livelihoods

FCDO recognizes the interconnectedness of food security and livelihoods in promoting sustainable development and poverty reduction. In Turkana County, where food insecurity and economic vulnerability are pervasive, our food security and livelihood programs aim to empower communities to become self-sufficient and resilient. We support agricultural training, provide access to seeds and tools, and promote sustainable farming practices to enhance agricultural productivity and diversify income sources. Additionally, FCDO facilitates the establishment of savings and loan groups and promotes entrepreneurship initiatives to create economic opportunities and improve household incomes. By addressing the root causes of food insecurity and poverty, FCDO contributes to building more resilient and prosperous communities in Turkana County.
