This week marks the conclusion of Nawiri’s three-week training series for 85 mentors supporting Girl-H and Boy Groups in Lokichar, Kalokol, and Lapur Wards in Turkana. These mentors play a crucial role as foot soldiers, actively engaged in training and coaching our targeted anchor group members with tailored messages.

As we expand our interventions and increase the number of anchor groups, the necessity of onboarding and enhancing the capacity of more mentors has become apparent.

Mr. Francis Edome, the Project Coordinator leading the training under the local implementing partner Frontier Children Development Organization (FCDO), underscores the significance of these programs. He states, “Our training programs are designed to bolster the capacity for meaningful engagement in livelihood activities, cultivate personal agency, and enhance adaptive skills among Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) as well as Adolescent Boys and Young Men (ABYM) within communities.”

The training covered key sessions on Gender, Youth, and social dynamics (GYSD), the Mentorship Model and Roles of mentors, Basic functional Literacy and numeracy, Program data management, and Code of Conduct. Mentors gained valuable insights into gender, youth, and social dynamics, strengthening their ability to understand and guide the girls and boys in their groups.

Representing the Nawiri Boy Group, Joshua Ekeno expressed satisfaction with the training, stating, “We express gratitude for the transformative influence of Nawiri in collaborating with our communities to alleviate Persistent Acute Malnutrition (PAM). This training has provided us with essential skills for impactful mentorship, emphasizing gender dynamics, Basic Functional Literacy and Numeracy, and the Mentorship model. We are now prepared to take the lead in conducting weekly safe space sessions to empower our group mentees.”

Nawiri’s emphasis on collaboration and local empowerment is evident through its close work with implementing partners like FCDO. This collaborative approach ensures the sustainability of interventions beyond the program period, aligning with Nawiri’s commitment to enhancing livelihoods and personal agency for youth in the communities they serve.
